Tube mill cooling: flow rate is not heat-rejection capacity

Cooling is specified by flow, pressure, supply and return temperatures, and heat load. Tank volume or pump power alone does not show how much heat is removed.

Distinguish four commonly confused quantities

Circulation flow describes how much fluid passes through the circuit per unit time. Tank volume describes stored fluid. Pump motor power drives circulation. Heat-rejection capacity describes the heat removed under specified conditions. These quantities are related, but they are not interchangeable.

Circulating water is also different from makeup water. Makeup replaces system losses and depends on the cooling arrangement and operating conditions; circulation flow should not be quoted as continuous consumption.

Why are supply and return temperatures necessary?

For a defined fluid under steady operating conditions, flow and the permitted temperature rise together determine how much heat the fluid can carry. Flow alone, without inlet temperature, permitted return temperature and equipment heat load, does not establish adequate cooling.

Heat carried away from the machine must still be rejected to the surroundings by the site cooling system. Check ambient conditions, the cooling equipment rating conditions and the operation of each circuit, rather than considering only the pump beside the machine.

Which interfaces should be confirmed?

Prepare the requirements for the HF power source, welding process and other cooling users separately. Do not assume that all equipment can share identical fluid-quality and temperature conditions.

  • Heat load or confirmed cooling requirements for each user
  • Required flow, supply pressure and permitted pressure drop
  • Supply temperature, permitted return temperature and site ambient conditions
  • Fluid, water quality, filtration requirements and circuit arrangement
  • Connections, equipment locations and responsibilities for pumping, heat exchange and site piping

Can existing cooling equipment be reused?

For a retrofit, provide the existing equipment ratings, circuit information and operating records, then compare them with the new line requirements. A large tank or a powerful pump does not replace that assessment.

There is no universal water-flow figure or chiller specification in this guide. Confirm the cooling arrangement for the selected equipment, production conditions and site, then verify it during integrated operation.
