Uncoilers

The uncoiler holds the steel coil and pays off strip as the entry section requires. It is the first machine in a tube mill, slitting or cold roll-forming line. Also known as a decoiler.

Its role in production

Illustrative render Its place in the line

An uncoiler has one job: hold a full coil securely and release strip at the speed required by the entry feeding section. It determines whether a coil goes on smoothly and also affects whether coil changes run without trouble.

Our uncoilers are grouped by expansion method, manual, pneumatic or hydraulic, and by layout, single-head, double-head or double top-cone. A single-head uncoiler is simple and suits lines with infrequent coil changes. A double-head uncoiler lets the operator load the next coil on one head while the other pays out; a 180-degree turn brings the prepared coil into position, followed by threading and joining, making it suitable for lines with matching storage and joining arrangements. Double top-cone uncoilers clamp the coil between two cones and suit wide, heavy coils. Braking is by band or disc brake; coils are loaded by crane or by a loading car.

Check coil weight, strip width, strip thickness, inside diameter and outside diameter together. A model suffix containing T denotes rated coil weight in metric tons; numbers in other model codes should not automatically be read as tonnage. Heavy coils can be handled with a loading car and support arm; a powered base swivel and powered unwinding kit reduce manual work. The width and thickness range of each model is listed in the table below.

Uncoilers are usually supplied together with the leveler, shear and butt welder and accumulator as the entry section of a tube mill, but they are also supplied individually or as replacements on existing lines. Please tell us the pay-off direction, the pass line height and the space available.

Specify the actual combinations of coil weight, inside diameter, outside diameter and strip width. Meeting each limit separately does not establish compatibility with every coil. Include your regular coil types, workshop handling method, loading arrangement and strip-end threading requirements.

For a retrofit, check alignment with downstream feeding equipment, unwinding direction, spacing and coordinated braking. A double-head arrangement allows preparation of the next coil, but continuity through a coil change also depends on the joining time and usable accumulator storage.
